It is a new school year and students are back in the classroom. They are adjusting to new rules and schedules, but mostly they are just happy to see their friends and teachers again.

Grade 12 St. Thomas Aquinas High School student Julia Tkachuk started school on Friday, September 4.

“It was really weird because it was really empty, and I’m used to seeing the halls full of kids. Now you just stick to your side of the hallway and go where you’re supposed to be and do whatever you have to do to make sure everyone is safe.” She said.

Students at St. Thomas Aquinas High School had a staggered start to the new school year and are adjusting to a new quadmester style timetable. The quadmester system sees the school year broken up into four semesters, and students attend two classes per quadmester.

Julia said she and her peers are taking it all in stride.

“Everyone is pretty good. Everyone wears their masks, and washes their hands, and tries to stay as far apart as possible, without putting in jeopardy the social aspects of being at school.”

Fellow Grade 12 student Kendaaz White said he was eager to return to the classroom.

“I find it pretty exciting because I get to see all my friends again after about 6 months of seeing them virtually online, or through social media.”

“It’s challenging because we don’t know what’s coming in the months and weeks ahead as the virus can still spread. But I find it easier to be in the classroom as opposed to virtual learning.”

He acknowledged things are different, but said it is reassuring to know that safety is a top priority.

“It’s a bit challenging but with all the safety precautions in place it brings a lot of peace to parents and students that we’re being protected from COVID-19.”

Both students are taking physics this quadmester, and Kendaaz said he is also able to participate in the co-op program.
