This past Monday, students at St. Thomas Aquinas High School had the opportunity to experience the democratic process firsthand through Student Vote Canada 2025—a nationwide initiative designed to engage young Canadians in civic participation.

A mock polling station was set up at STAHS, giving all students in Grades 7–12 the chance to cast their ballots in a simulated federal election. The experience mirrored the real thing, helping students better understand how elections work and why voting matters.

We’re proud to share that 62% of our student body voted—a number that matches the national turnout in Canada’s most recent federal election. The results from STAHS saw the Conservative Party elected with 49.7% of the vote, closely reflecting the actual outcome in our local riding, where the Conservative candidate won with 50.2%.

Nationwide, over 900,000 students took part in Student Vote 2025. Their collective choice also elected a Conservative government with 36.4% of the vote, just edging out the Liberal Party by a narrow margin. Meanwhile, the actual federal election resulted in a Liberal minority government, winning 43.5% of the vote to the Conservatives’ 41.4%—with a few votes still being counted.

We’d like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who participated in the Student Vote, to those who helped run the polling station, and to our senior students who had the opportunity to vote in the real election and took the time to do so.

Through initiatives like this, we’re helping the next generation of voters develop the knowledge and confidence to be active participants in Canada’s democracy. 🇨🇦🗳️
