Hands-On with the Trades!
Posted on 06/04/2025

Our
Grade 7 students rolled up their sleeves yesterday morning for an exciting day of hands-on learning, exploring the world of skilled trades through a series of engaging activities as part of an OYAP (Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program) event.

Framing with Chase Creed – Chase, an Operations & Maintenance Worker with KCDSB, guided students in building wooden structures designed to withstand weight and impact, teaching them the basics of construction and structural integrity.

Plumbing with Jon Pearson – Jon, also part of our KCDSB Operations & Maintenance team, gave students a crash course in how to plumb a sink and shared insights from his trade experience.

Electrical Circuits – Another station had students exploring how circuits work and discovering the power of electricity.

Measuring & Math Skills – At the final station, students put their math skills to the test by using measuring tapes to solve coded challenges and measure boards to exact lengths.

It was an incredible opportunity for students to learn practical skills, explore career paths, and gain a deeper appreciation for the trades. Thank you to our dedicated staff and partners for making this event such a success!
