Students from St. Thomas Aquinas High School recently took part in the 68th Annual Model United Nations (MUN) Assembly, hosted by Rotary’s Winnipeg Chapter. This long-standing event brings together high school students from across the region to experience the diplomacy, collaboration, and debate that drive global decision-making at the United Nations.

This year, two teams proudly represented TA:

  • Izzah Imran and Stephanie Titova, who represented Belgium

  • Michaela Mole and Josh Pitt, who returned as veterans representing Croatia

The 2024 MUN Assembly focused on two significant global issues: the ongoing refugee crisis and the topic of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Each team selected a resolution to work on—beginning with research and drafting, followed by in-depth discussion, negotiation, and a final vote. We’re proud to share that both resolutions were successfully passed.

In addition to the students participating, TA alumni Akbar Imran and Anwyn Friesen Kroeker were part of this year’s organizing committee—demonstrating the lasting impact of the MUN experience and their continued commitment to global citizenship.

This year also marked a moment of gratitude for two long-serving supporters of the program: Jerry and Jane, retiring Rotarians who have dedicated decades to the success of this event. A special shoutout also goes to Mr. James Trudeau, now recognized as one of the longest-serving MUN counselors.

We caught up with teacher Ms. Warren, who accompanied the students, and asked her about the value of the Model UN experience:

“With most students, you'll see a few cautious looks toward their counselors at the beginning of the day, but once they've gotten over the scary first step of that initial contribution to the discussion, you see their confidence start to grow. Through collaboration and the formation of alliances, they have to come out of their shells. It really is amazing to see.”

“They learn so much—not only about their country and global issues, but about how the UN functions, what its limitations are, and how a resolution is passed. It really is an amazing event. So glad Mr. Trudeau got me into it 🙂”

Congratulations to all our delegates on their professionalism, leadership, and commitment to global awareness. We’re proud of how you represented our school on the world stage!
