The Kenora Catholic District School Board holds social justice as an important pillar in school life and Catholic education. Encouraging our students to play a meaningful role in the social fabric of every community is something Kenora Catholic believes should begin as early as possible. Throughout their journey from Kindergarten to graduation, all of our students help their schools raise awareness, money, or collect items for a variety of charitable organizations. The Terry Fox Foundation, WE Charity, Canadian Cancer Society and Jump Rope for Heart are just a few examples of the organizations that our students work towards helping. Students also help local organizations by donating their time, like making sandwiches for the Fellowship Centre. During Advent and Lent we put a special emphasis on aiding others in our community and the world that need help. Our students learn how and why they should use their God-given potential to make a difference.
At St. Thomas Aquinas High School, we also offer a Youth in Philanthropy program in partnership with the Kenora and Lake of the Woods Regional Community Foundation. Students are given four grants to give to local charities of their choice. They spend a few months researching the different charities and their impact on the community before presenting them with a cheque at a sepcial granting ceremony. The YIP program is a great way for students to get involved in the community.
